Dolphin Strand Feeding

UNIQUE TO THE CHARLESTON LOWCOUNTRY

Dolphin strand feeding is a unique and fascinating hunting technique used by certain groups of dolphins, specifically bottlenose dolphins, in South Carolina and a few other regions. It is a learned behavior that is passed down through generations within specific dolphin communities.

During strand feeding, a group of dolphins works together to chase a school of fish, typically mullet or other small fish, into shallow waters near the shoreline. Once the dolphins have corralled the fish into a concentrated area, they swim at high speeds towards the shore, driving the fish ahead of them. As the water gets shallower and the fish are trapped closer to the beach, the dolphins ride the waves and quickly beach themselves, intentionally propelling their bodies onto the sand.

By stranding themselves on the shore, the dolphins are in a prime position to reach the fish. They immediately slide back into the water using their strong tails and flippers, while snapping their mouths shut to capture the disoriented and trapped fish. After a successful hunt, they return to deeper waters and repeat the process as necessary to catch more fish.

This behavior is remarkable because it demonstrates the dolphins’ ability to adapt their hunting techniques to exploit the unique geography of their environment. Strand feeding is a rare behavior observed in only a few dolphin populations, making it a subject of interest for researchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Our Dolphin Sighting Tours are a great opportunity to see this rare unique wildlife behavior only found in the waters surrounding Morris Island and the Charleston Lowcountry.
